It’s been best part of 20 years and I’m surviving in this world without my mother as an alarm clock, you’d be surprised to know I once had pretty poor time management. Looking back I can see why, from not giving myself enough time to get to places, not allowing myself enough time to get ready, I’d forget to set an alarm. The impact of poor time management can effect how potential employers perceive you. You’re at risk of arriving flustered and unfocused.
Supply Work isn’t always pre-booked, you can expect to get a last minute call on the morning which can make getting anywhere on time particularly difficult.
Here are a few useful tips to help you with good time management.
Set your alarm for 6:30am
I started to set about ten alarms three minutes apart in case I switched my first alarm off. You can expect to be contacted from 7:00am in the morning, so make sure you’re awake and have given yourself time to do whatever morning routine you need to do before leaving for work.
Choose your outfit the night before
Knowing what to wear saves so much time.
Keep a supply bag
Your supply bag should include resources for all age groups, a diary and spare stationery. Keep it in a place you can grab it easily for a quick exit!
Lunch
Either prepare a packed lunch or take money to purchase food.
Is your car ready?
Does your car need fuel? Will a trip to refill affect what time you get to your placement?
Technology fully charged?
Do you need your mobile, iPad or laptop? Make sure they are all fully charged the night before, put near your supply bag so you can pick it up and go.
Car keys
So you’re dressed with your supply bag in hand, where are your car keys? Yep I’ve been there, and they were eventually found in a coat pocket or on a window sill, or even in the wash basket (don’t ask). Keep your car keys with your supply bag or a place you know you can find them quickly to leave.
